Power devices are essential in controlling electrical power used in all sorts of devices from electrical vehicles (EVs) to railroads to elevators. However when converting power from DC to AC there is substantial energy loss which can result in more generation needed and potentially more GHG emissions depending on the energy source. Also renewable energy sources such as solar and wind is typically creating DC power which needs to be converted to AC before use, again there is energy loss in this conversion. However, Toshiba is developing next generation power devices using SIC (silicon carbide) that reduces resistance which in turn reduces energy loss. Incorporating SIC into next generation power devices will ensure a more efficient energy ecosystem.
